This case study examines the implementation of data management automation at the Shire of Esperance, a local government in Western Australia. The objective was to enhance the management of geospatial information systems while reducing the maintenance burden on the IT department. The Shire transitioned its GIS systems to ESRI ArcGIS Enterprise, which introduced challenges in managing data across development, testing, and production environments. To address these challenges, the IT department developed PowerShell scripts and modules to streamline data migration processes. The introduction of Safe Software's FME platform allowed for the encapsulation and automation of existing tools, enabling GIS officers to manage data migration securely and efficiently. This solution significantly reduced the time required for spatial data management tasks and improved documentation and troubleshooting processes. The case study highlights the benefits of using FME to enhance existing systems rather than replacing them, paving the way for future improvements in data management practices.
