This case study details the implementation of a fiber network management system by Durham OneNet, a Municipal Services Corporation in Ontario, Canada. Established to execute the region's 2019 Broadband Strategy, Durham OneNet is responsible for a 700-kilometre open-access fiber backbone. The organization operates as a dark fiber provider, leasing capacity to various entities while aiming to close the digital divide and support municipal services. The case study outlines the challenges faced by Durham OneNet, including the need for a streamlined system to manage their expanding network without added complexity. The solution provided by 3-GIS includes a scalable system that centralizes data and simplifies operations. The results show that Durham OneNet effectively manages over 400 km of fiber builds, with expectations to exceed 500 km by the end of 2025. The system allows for accurate recordkeeping and efficient documentation processes, enhancing operational capabilities and supporting the organization's strategic goals.
