This white paper examines the effects of targeted grants provided to 11 diverse NGOs aimed at enhancing their fundraising capabilities from FY2013 to FY2024. It outlines how these strategic investments focused on critical areas such as hiring, team upskilling, technology utilization, and operational process improvements, significantly bolstered the financial resilience of these organizations. The findings indicate that NGOs treating fundraising as a core capability, rather than a support function, achieved better financial sustainability and growth. The report categorizes the NGOs into two performance groups—Leading 5 and Trailing 6—highlighting their varying success in fundraising investments. Key metrics such as Payback on Fundraising Investment (POFI), financial growth, and donor diversity are analyzed, showcasing how strategic investments lead to improved donor engagement, retention, and overall financial health. Recommendations for donors emphasize the importance of long-term support to enable NGOs to strengthen their fundraising capabilities effectively.
