This research article published in the International Journal of Production Research investigates the challenges faced by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in their digital transformation efforts towards Industry 4.0. The authors, Andreas Kornmaaler Hansen, Lasse Christiansen, and Astrid Heidemann Lassen, explore the relationship between competence development and the slow pace of digital transformation in SMEs. The study is guided by the research question regarding how competence development approaches can explain the observed patterns of slow digital transformation. Through empirical research involving 30 manufacturing SMEs, the article identifies barriers such as resource availability, lack of knowledge, and insufficient skills that hinder progress. The authors argue for a scaffolding approach to competence development, emphasizing the need for SMEs to enhance their workforce's skills to effectively leverage digital technologies. The findings suggest that addressing these competencies early in the digital transformation process is crucial for SMEs to realize the potential benefits of Industry 4.0.
