This case study examines the implementation of virtual warehousing through digitalized inventory and on-demand manufacturing. It outlines the challenges and key elements necessary for successfully establishing a virtual warehouse, particularly for legacy parts that were initially developed for conventional manufacturing methods. The authors propose a framework that includes the development of a digital inventory containing supply chain and manufacturability data, the identification of suitable parts for on-demand manufacturing, and the selection of appropriate manufacturing technologies. The study emphasizes the importance of part validation and the availability of digital data to ensure quality and efficiency in the manufacturing process. Additionally, it discusses the role of digital manufacturing technologies, such as direct and indirect additive manufacturing, in enhancing supply chain performance by enabling cost reductions and production optimization. The findings suggest that effective virtual warehousing requires a combination of digital inventory management and flexible part identification tools to meet the demands of modern manufacturing.
