This technical report examines sandwich generation caregivers who provide care for both older adults and children under 18 years of age. Utilizing data from the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS) and the National Study of Caregiving (NSOC), the report profiles the demographics, experiences, and challenges faced by these caregivers. It highlights that nearly 12 percent of caregivers of Medicare beneficiaries also care for a child under 18, with a significant portion being younger and more racially and ethnically diverse compared to other caregivers. The report details the financial and emotional strains these caregivers experience, as they often balance employment with caregiving responsibilities. Furthermore, it discusses the implications of caregiving on their economic well-being, noting that many caregivers spend a substantial portion of their income on caregiving-related expenses. The findings aim to inform policies and practices to better support sandwich generation caregivers and the individuals they care for.
