This technical report presents an analysis of high-performance two-phase cooling systems under varying cold plate orientations. The study investigates the effectiveness of two-phase cooling for data center applications, highlighting the benefits of using dielectric coolants and the challenges posed by different orientations of cold plates. The experimental setup involved testing a thermal test vehicle with a copper block and varying heating power while measuring thermal resistance across three orientations: horizontal upward, horizontal downward, and vertical. Results indicate that the performance of two-phase cold plates varies significantly with orientation and power levels. At lower power levels, horizontal downward orientations demonstrated superior thermal resistance, while vertical orientations outperformed others at higher power levels. The findings suggest that two-phase cooling solutions can maintain efficient thermal management across various orientations without requiring modifications to existing cold plate designs. This research contributes to the understanding of thermal packaging in high-power processors and the potential for innovative cooling strategies in data centers.
