This case study details the data governance challenges faced by Black Gold School Division (BGSD) in Alberta, Canada, which manages sensitive personal data for approximately 13,000 students and over 1,300 staff members. BGSD accumulated over 70 terabytes of data across various platforms, leading to operational inefficiencies and compliance risks due to unaddressed data as staff transitioned or retired. The division recognized the need for a more proactive approach to data governance and compliance with provincial data privacy laws. To address these issues, BGSD implemented ActiveNav Cloud, a solution that integrates with Google Workspace, SharePoint Online, and file share environments. The deployment of ActiveNav Cloud allowed BGSD to analyze unstructured data, identify unauthorized data storage, and prioritize the disposal of non-compliant data. The partnership with ActiveNav has enhanced BGSD's data governance framework, enabling continuous monitoring and proactive risk management while instilling confidence in the community regarding data security.
