This case study outlines the challenges faced by the largest public employee retirement system in the U.S. during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly regarding its aging IT infrastructure. The agency, which serves over 350,000 workers, experienced significant demands on its operations, including managing approximately 50,000 loans and various pension-related applications. The mainframe-based pension system, developed in the 1980s, posed difficulties in connecting with modern applications, complicating transactions and data access. To address these challenges, the agency implemented the Adaptive Integration Fabric, which allowed for real-time access to mainframe data through modern APIs. This integration enabled the agency to enhance its services, particularly with the Salesforce CRM, ensuring continuity of operations during remote work conditions. The case study also highlights future plans for further integration and development to meet increasing demands and improve efficiency.
