This case study details the migration of Skandinavisk Data Center's (SDC) core banking system from an IBM mainframe to the Microsoft Application Platform. Founded in 1963, SDC provides IT services to small and medium-sized banks, helping them remain competitive. The transition was necessitated by the need for improved agility, performance, and reduced operational costs. The solution involved the use of various Microsoft technologies, including the .NET Framework, SQL Server, and Fujitsu NetCOBOL, to facilitate the migration of over 11.2 million lines of COBOL code. The collaboration with Microsoft Services and third-party partners was crucial in ensuring system availability, reliability, and security during the transition. As a result of this migration, SDC achieved significant operational cost savings of $16 million annually and enhanced system availability to 99.8%, thereby positioning itself to better meet service level agreements and expand its market presence.
