Identifying Rare Diseases and Time to Diagnosis

This research article investigates the relationship between the availability of therapies for rare diseases and the time to diagnosis. A literature search was conducted focusing on hereditary angioedema, Gaucher's disease, and Fabry's disease, utilizing databases such as PubMed and Google Scholar to identify relevant studies. The primary outcome measured was the mean age of diagnosis, while the secondary outcome focused on the mean age of participation in various studies. The analysis involved mapping patient ages and study years to assess trends using linear regression. The findings indicated that the commercial availability of treatments did not significantly impact the age of diagnosis, although there was a trend of increasing age of participation in studies following treatment availability. The study suggests that while therapy approval may attract research interest, further investigation is needed to explore the implications of increased awareness on the identification of mild disease cases in older patients.
