This case study documents the implementation of the Altera Sunrise Electronic Patient Record (EPR) at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, which began in October 2019. The primary objective was to enhance patient care by providing a comprehensive electronic patient list that tracks referrals and admissions across various departments. The study outlines the challenges faced by the Trust, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic, including increased patient acuity and the need for efficient tracking systems. It describes how the EPR facilitated a significant reduction in waiting times for clinical reviews, with a 34% decrease in waiting time for senior decision-makers and a 19% reduction in hospital length of stay. The case study highlights the flexibility of the Sunrise system, which allowed clinicians to adapt the electronic patient list to meet their needs, ultimately improving patient flow and clinical outcomes. The results indicate a positive impact on both operational efficiency and patient experience, demonstrating the effectiveness of the EPR in a clinical setting.
