This case study outlines the collaborative project undertaken by Bolton NHS Foundation Trust to develop a digital solution aimed at reducing unnecessary police callouts for patients missing from emergency departments. The initiative involved the integration of a risk assessment and documentation tool within the Sunrise Electronic Patient Record (EPR) system, co-designed with Altera Digital Health. The tool employs a Red-Amber-Green (RAG) algorithm to guide clinicians through essential checks, ensuring that police referrals are based on shared criteria. The implementation has led to a significant decrease in police callouts, from an average of 42 to 17 per month, thereby alleviating pressure on emergency services. Additionally, the solution enhances patient safety by ensuring appropriate care and reduces the administrative burden on staff, promoting a supportive work environment. The project has garnered national recognition, showcasing the impact of digital innovation in healthcare delivery and establishing best practices for other NHS trusts.
