This report presents findings from 15 confidential interviews conducted by the American Heart Association with health care team members working in Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) across the United States. The interviews included a diverse group of professionals, such as primary care physicians, specialty physicians, nurse care managers, and social workers, who collectively contributed over 250 years of experience in health care. The report outlines the common themes identified by the participants, emphasizing that ACOs improve patient care through a holistic approach that addresses both medical and non-medical factors affecting health. The findings indicate that ACOs foster regular sources of care, enhance collaboration among health care professionals, and improve patient engagement. Additionally, the report highlights the positive work environment created by ACOs, which allows providers to deliver comprehensive care and reduces burnout. Overall, the interviews reveal that ACOs offer a more sustainable and effective model for health care delivery compared to traditional fee-for-service systems.
