This document is a validation study focused on new picture stimuli for the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS). The NIHSS is a widely used tool for assessing neurological function in stroke patients. The study addresses concerns regarding the existing picture stimuli, which may not be culturally relevant or universally understood. The new stimuli, including the precarious painter image, were developed to better serve stroke providers globally. The study involved 101 healthy English-speaking participants from various countries, who provided descriptions of the new picture and named illustrations. The results indicated that the new stimuli were recognized and preferred by the majority of stroke healthcare providers. The study also established a rubric for assessing descriptions and evaluated performance on picture description and naming tasks. The findings suggest that the new stimuli can enhance the detection of language deficits in stroke assessments, providing a more inclusive and relevant tool for diverse populations.
