Balance the Equation Algebra I Grand Challenge Results Summary

This document is a results summary of the Balance the Equation Algebra I Grand Challenge, initiated by the Gates Foundation in fall 2020. The challenge aimed to identify and study innovative solutions to enhance math outcomes for priority students, including those who are Black, Latino, affected by poverty, or designated as English learners. The Foundation funded 15 grantees to design and refine their solutions, with 10 grantees conducting studies to assess the effectiveness of their interventions. The American Institutes for Research served as a learning partner, assisting in study planning, execution, and data analysis. The summary outlines the types of solutions implemented, including teacher professional development and student programs, and details the research questions, study designs, and data sources used in the evaluations. It also discusses the challenges faced during the studies and presents findings related to implementation and student outcomes, emphasizing the importance of understanding the scalability of these solutions.
