This guide presents evidence-based practices for out-of-school time (OST) programs, aimed at assisting professionals in effectively utilizing evidence to enhance their programming. The document outlines the importance of evidence in informing program design, funding applications, and operational improvements. It details a vetted list of practices categorized by focus areas, including program structure development, staff support, and engagement with young people. Each practice is supported by relevant evidence, emphasizing its applicability in real-world settings. The guide also discusses the significance of evidence in promoting efficiency and buy-in among stakeholders, providing examples of when the practices may be particularly beneficial. Additionally, appendices are included to explain the methods used in compiling the evidence and guidance on how to implement the practices. This work is part of the OST Cost Study conducted by the American Institutes for Research, with support from various organizations, to understand the costs associated with high-quality OST programs.
