This report presents findings from a survey conducted by the American Management Association, which aimed to explore the management styles of professionals and their effectiveness. The survey included 1,139 respondents, comprising 905 managers and 234 staff members. Key findings indicate a disparity between how managers perceive their predominant style and how staff perceive their management. While 55% of managers identified as democratic, only a third of staff agreed. Additionally, over half of the staff reported not being managed in their preferred style, highlighting a significant area of dissatisfaction. The report outlines four major management styles: autocratic, democratic, laissez-faire, and facilitative, detailing their characteristics and contexts of use. It emphasizes the importance of adapting management styles to fit team dynamics and individual preferences, as well as the influence of personal and organizational factors on these styles. The report concludes with a call for improved management training to better equip leaders in their roles.
