This case study outlines the strategies employed by Sutter Health to address physician burnout, which had escalated significantly in 2021 and 2022. In response, Sutter Health established a systemwide interdisciplinary well-being committee and local committees at each of its 22 hospitals. The initiatives included teaching electronic health record (EHR) shortcuts, creating a peer support program, and advocating for improved staffing. The case study reports a notable decrease in burnout rates from 33.9% in 2022 to 29.3% in 2023, alongside an increase in the number of physicians feeling valued. The well-being committee also focused on enhancing mental health resources, improving food options, upgrading facilities and equipment, and addressing workplace violence. Furthermore, the committee implemented training for leaders on supporting employees and shared best practices for recognition and gratitude. The results indicate a comprehensive approach to improving physician well-being and reducing burnout across the health system.
