This study is focused on understanding how couples perceive money management and retirement planning, based on research conducted by Ameriprise Financial. The study surveyed over 1,500 American couples, primarily aged 45 to 70, who have investable assets of $100,000 or more. It discusses key findings regarding couples’ shared goals for retirement and their need for alignment on financial details. While 93% of couples express shared retirement goals, many delay discussions on difficult financial topics. The research indicates the essential role that financial advisors play in guiding couples through retirement planning challenges. Moreover, it highlights discrepancies in financial decision-making, with a significant portion of couples disagreeing on spending categories and support for adult family members. The study also notes that while most couples are transparent about finances, formal financial and estate plans remain largely unaddressed. Findings suggest that professional guidance is beneficial for achieving financial confidence and clarity in retirement planning.
