This technical report examines the effects of progress monitoring versus benchmarking on student achievement as measured by the Istation Indicators of Progress (ISIP) assessment. The study analyzes data from kindergarten through third-grade students in Idaho during the 2021-2022 school year, with a focus on overall ISIP scores and percentile gains. Key findings indicate that students engaged in progress monitoring consistently outperformed those in the benchmarking group across all grade levels. The report details how students who participated in monthly progress monitoring for nine months achieved significantly higher gains compared to those who were benchmarked for shorter periods. Additionally, the report highlights the negative percentile growth observed in many benchmarking students, particularly in the earlier grades. The analysis further stratifies results by grade level and tier, revealing that progress monitoring leads to greater improvements in reading skills, especially for struggling students. The report concludes that progress monitoring is a more effective approach for enhancing student achievement compared to traditional benchmarking methods.
