Survey of Public School Healthcare Staffing Trends 2023

This document is a report detailing the findings of AMN Healthcare's inaugural Survey of Public School Healthcare Staffing Trends conducted in 2023. The survey aimed to examine the staffing needs and practices of healthcare professionals in public school districts across the United States. It was distributed to approximately 65,000 school administrators, with responses collected from 243 schools in 44 states, resulting in a 4% response rate. Key findings indicate that 52% of schools reported being understaffed, and 29% noted that students lack appropriate access to necessary healthcare professionals. The report highlights that 73% of schools utilize contract healthcare professionals to meet staffing needs, with speech language pathologists being the most commonly employed. The survey also identifies challenges in recruiting various healthcare roles and outlines steps schools are taking to address staffing shortages, including increasing salaries and utilizing teletherapy.
