This case study details the Oak Harbor School District's transition to the Science of Reading through the adoption of Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA). The district, serving over 5,400 students, faced significant challenges with only 50% of elementary students meeting reading proficiency standards prior to the curriculum change. Following a rigorous review process, Amplify CKLA was identified as the most aligned program to the Science of Reading. The pilot program commenced in the fall of 2020, supported by a team of community members and literacy coaches to ensure effective implementation. By the end of the two-year pilot, the district reported substantial growth in reading proficiency, with some classes achieving 100% proficiency. Longitudinal data indicated up to 23% growth in reading proficiency across elementary schools, particularly notable in kindergarten and first grade. The case study emphasizes the importance of a structured approach to literacy education and the positive impact on students and families, highlighting the district's commitment to improving educational outcomes.
