Ensuring Security in a Cloud-First Environment

This case study outlines the challenges faced by a national security customer requiring a next-generation unclassified software development environment. The customer aimed to consolidate multiple independently run government and contractor labs into a single environment that could effectively detect insider and external threats. The proposed solution by Applied Insight involved an infrastructure-as-code approach with a focus on automation, which aimed to enhance development speed, reusability, and reduce support costs. Security was a primary concern, leading to the design and deployment of a secure and scalable environment based on AWS. This environment provides centralized DevOps services, including source control management and continuous integration across the organization. The solution ultimately enabled the customer's technical staff to have self-service access to the resources necessary for their projects while ensuring resource usage remained within budget and complied with standards such as FedRAMP.
