CyLab-Africa Report on Financial Mobile Apps Security

This technical report presents an analysis of security challenges associated with financial mobile applications in Africa. It investigates the prevalence of unsecured secret keys within the binary packages of 224 popular Android financial applications. The study reveals that approximately 272 million users have downloaded apps that expose sensitive keys, such as authentication and payment keys, which increases the risk of cyberattacks. The report outlines the methodology used for the analysis, including the tools employed to identify vulnerabilities in the applications. It also compares the security challenges faced in Africa with those in the United States and Europe, highlighting trends and disparities. The findings emphasize the urgent need for improved security practices among developers and the importance of safeguarding user data. Recommendations are provided for developers and the general public to enhance mobile app security and protect against potential threats.
