This case study examines the challenges and opportunities associated with reshoring paracetamol active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) production in Europe. It outlines the increasing pressure on pharmaceutical companies to reshore essential medicine production while minimizing environmental impacts. The study employs a localized, gate-to-gate Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach, following ISO 14040:2026 standards, to evaluate a 1,000 kg paracetamol production scenario. The findings reveal that significant environmental burdens arise not from the core synthesis process but from supporting operations such as filtration, packaging, and drying. The analysis emphasizes the importance of integrating circular economy principles into reshoring efforts, highlighting that simply relocating production does not guarantee sustainability. Instead, it advocates for a redesign of manufacturing processes that prioritize resource recovery and efficiency. The study ultimately aims to provide a framework for more resilient, circular, and data-driven pharmaceutical manufacturing in Europe.
