This case study details the design and installation of a grand stairwell ceiling at the Lanier Theological Library, inspired by the stairwell at Christ Church, University of Oxford. The project aimed to create an impressive entrance to the great hall within the library. The design team from Armstrong World Industries utilized 236 custom-made CastWorks™ GRG ceiling forms to replicate the historical limestone ceiling concept. Initial challenges arose due to asymmetrical measurements of the 1,600-square-foot room, which required adjustments to the design. The team modified the rib widths to maintain the aesthetic symmetry. Installation involved complex scaffolding to reach the ceiling forms, which were secured with embedded wood blocking. After installation, finishing touches included taping, mudding, and applying a faux finish to mimic the appearance of the original limestone. The completed ceiling serves as a focal point, enhancing the grandeur of the stairwell and the overall space.
