This technical report presents findings from the 2024 AMA prior authorization physician survey, which assesses the effects of prior authorization (PA) on patient care, physician workload, and healthcare costs. The survey involved 1,000 practicing physicians and reveals that PA processes often lead to significant delays in patient care, with 93% of respondents reporting care delays. Additionally, 82% of physicians indicate that PA can lead to treatment abandonment, and 29% report that PA has caused serious adverse events for patients. The report outlines the administrative burdens placed on physicians, with an average of 39 PAs completed per physician each week, contributing to physician burnout. The findings also highlight the financial implications of PA, including increased healthcare resource utilization and out-of-pocket costs for patients. Despite efforts to improve the PA process, the report indicates minimal progress from health plans in reducing the burden associated with PA requirements.
