This case study details the development, construction, and operation of a central and secure infrastructure for testing the electronic healthcare card (eGK) and other digital health applications in Germany. The initiative is spearheaded by gematik, the National Agency for Digital Medicine, which aims to modernize the German healthcare system through the introduction of a telematics infrastructure (TI). The TI encompasses various integrated components, including Public Key Infrastructures (PKI) for digital encryption and signatures, Wide Area Networks (WAN) for secure data transmission, and data center services. The project is designed to facilitate the secure, efficient, and user-friendly exchange of data among all participants in the healthcare system. The outcome of this initiative is expected to enhance the quality, transparency, and efficiency of patient treatment while simplifying information exchange. The infrastructure services are quality-assured and operated in Arvato Systems' certified data centers located in Gütersloh and Bielefeld, Germany.
