This report presents an analysis of the impact of data recovery on the outcomes of cyberattacks, specifically focusing on ransomware incidents. The research conducted by At-Bay’s Cyber Research team aims to quantify the effectiveness of backup systems in reducing claim severity and business downtime. The findings indicate that while a significant percentage of businesses report having backups, a notable portion fails to restore data when needed. Specifically, 31% of businesses were unable to recover data from their backups after an attack, despite 92% claiming to have functioning backups. The report highlights that successful restoration from backups can lead to a 41% reduction in the severity of ransomware claims. Additionally, it underscores the importance of backup architecture, revealing that cloud-based backups have a higher recovery rate compared to other types. The report aims to guide organizations in improving their backup strategies to enhance data recovery and minimize the financial impact of cyberattacks.
