This technical report examines the financial health of private Masters and Baccalaureate institutions, focusing on approximately 315 institutions from a proprietary database. It outlines the concerns expressed by senior leaders regarding financial circumstances, primarily driven by enrollment and cost structure issues. The report finds that 31% of these institutions are under significant financial stress, while another 32% are at risk due to demographic changes or economic downturns. The analysis reveals a widening gap in financial health between wealthier and less wealthy institutions, with the wealthiest demonstrating superior operating margins and maintaining their physical assets. The report also discusses the Composite Financial Index (CFI) as a metric for assessing financial health, emphasizing the importance of balance sheet health and the need for institutions in poor financial condition to reassess their business models. The findings suggest that many institutions are facing severe financial challenges that could impact their long-term viability.
