This case study outlines ExxonMobil's development of the ExxonMobil Renewable Diesel (EMRD) process, which aims to enhance renewable diesel production while adhering to stringent product specifications. The study details the challenges faced by sustainable fuel producers, including the need to meet advanced cold flow specifications and optimize production yields. To address these challenges, ExxonMobil utilized AVEVA PRO/II Simulation, a sophisticated tool that aids in the design and optimization of complex processes. The EMRD process is characterized by its two-stage production, which allows for superior control over hydrotreating and dewaxing, ultimately maximizing yield. The case study explains the intricate steps involved in synthesizing the process, from identifying the necessary chemistry to designing reactors and optimizing heat exchange networks. Furthermore, it highlights the anticipated impact of the Strathcona diesel facility, which is expected to produce 20,000 barrels of renewable diesel per day and significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the Canadian transportation sector.
