This case study details the collaborative efforts of Baker Hughes' Well Construction Solutions team in drilling exploration wells in a new block of a deep shale gas field in Sichuan Province, China. The operator faced challenges due to limited reference data from offset wells, which complicated the navigation of wells through the complex reservoir. To address these challenges, Baker Hughes developed a low-risk, high-efficiency drilling program that integrated various technologies from its product lines. The local team successfully drilled two exploration wells, achieving significant time and cost savings while maximizing pay zone exposure. The first well was completed in 28.57 days, 41% faster than the average, while the second well took 34.32 days, 29% faster than the average. Both wells achieved high pay zone exposure rates of 100% and 97.5%. The successful outcomes led to a milestone bonus for Baker Hughes and opened discussions for future drilling opportunities.
