This research article evaluates the impact of smart pump technology, specifically focusing on dose-error reduction systems (DERS) and electronic medical record (EMR) interoperability, on clinician productivity within a large healthcare system. The study analyzes infusion data from Spectrum IQ smart pumps across six hospitals, comparing pre-integration and post-integration metrics. It documents significant reductions in programming steps and time to initiate infusions, highlighting that auto-programming resulted in fewer steps and shorter median times compared to manual programming. The findings indicate that the integration of these technologies can alleviate the cognitive burden on nursing staff, which has become increasingly critical due to staffing shortages exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The results suggest that enhancing workflow efficiency through smart pump technology may help mitigate nurse burnout and improve operational performance. The study also outlines limitations and suggests areas for future research to further explore the integration of smart pumps and EMR systems.
