This research report presents findings from a study conducted by BBC Media Action in 2024, focusing on the food environment and consumer voices in Tanzania. Funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), the project aims to enhance the health of vulnerable populations through a food systems approach. The report outlines the mixed-methods research methodology, which included a nationally representative survey of over 2,500 adults and qualitative research involving in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and ethnographic observations. Key findings indicate that while a variety of foods are available, factors such as transportation barriers, high costs, and sociocultural beliefs significantly influence food consumption patterns. The report identifies five consumer segments based on food security and engagement levels. Recommendations are provided to promote healthy eating and empower consumers to advocate for better food options and safety. The communication framework developed from this study aims to increase consumer agency in demanding healthy, affordable, and safe foods.
