This case study presents the development of instrumentation for remotely sensing thermally generated electromagnetic radiation, focusing on a compact subsystem module designed for integration into a remote sensing device deployed in low Earth orbit (LEO). The device aims to take temperature measurements of the Earth’s atmosphere, integrating various subsystems to collect data that enhances weather models. The study outlines the challenges faced in crafting a satellite payload system, particularly in developing a radiometer operating in the V band. Benchmark was tasked with creating an intermediate frequency (IF) module to channelize, amplify, and output the down-converted noise signal. The case study details the engineering process, including performance specifications, component selection, and the development of a receiver compatible with legacy systems. The results indicate that the integration of the IFM receiver significantly improved performance and system miniaturization, allowing for flexible channel configurations based on specific weather applications.
