This case study details the application of OpenFlows FLOOD software to quantify critical flood-prone areas in Portugal. The project, led by the Portuguese Environmental Agency, aimed to produce flood inundation and risk maps for various regions, identifying 22 critical zones. The study outlines the historical context of flooding in Portugal, emphasizing the impact of climate change and urbanization on flood risks. It describes the methodologies used, including hydrological modeling and the creation of inundation maps based on different return periods. The study also highlights the legal framework established by the European Union to manage flood risks and the role of the APA in implementing these measures. The generated flood risk maps serve as essential tools for decision-making and prioritizing actions to mitigate future flood impacts. The findings are intended to support the development of Inundation Risk Management Plans, enhancing societal resilience against flooding events.
