This report presents the findings from a study evaluating the Beyond Basics Reading Tutoring Program, specifically focusing on the Read to Rise initiative. Conducted by Dr. Carl Freeman and Dr. Hilary Horn Ratner from Wayne State University, the study aimed to quantify the program's effectiveness in improving literacy among students in grades 2 through 5. The evaluation involved a randomized control trial where students were assigned to either a treatment group, which received tutoring based on the Tattum Reading approach, or a control group, which did not receive any tutoring. The study utilized the Woodcock Reading Mastery Test to assess reading proficiency before and after the intervention. Results indicated significant improvements in various reading skills for the treatment group compared to the control group, with notable growth in word identification and comprehension skills. The findings suggest that the Read to Rise program effectively enhances literacy skills among struggling readers in under-resourced communities.
