This technical report presents a multi-country health economic analysis evaluating the impact of early deployment of fast identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (ID/AST) in the care pathway for patients at high risk of sepsis due to bloodstream infections. Conducted by the Office of Health Economics, the analysis includes data from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It highlights the critical role of timely diagnostics in preventing deterioration into sepsis, improving patient outcomes, and achieving substantial cost savings for healthcare systems. The findings indicate that early access to diagnostic information can significantly reduce the incidence of sepsis and associated complications, leading to improved quality of life for patients. The report also discusses the economic implications, revealing that savings from implementing fast diagnostics can range from €500 to €3,800 per patient, depending on the country, and suggests necessary policy changes to enhance the value and funding of diagnostic tools in healthcare.
