This application story outlines the development of a multi-axis CNC machine designed for cutting custom shapes from raw glass. The objective was to create an economical and user-friendly machine that is easy to operate and maintain. The cutting table employs an air system to create a vacuum that holds glass parts in place during the cutting process. However, this system poses challenges, such as the potential for glass dust to interfere with the cutting axis. To address these challenges, the OEM required a robust actuator that would facilitate installation and withstand abrasive glass dust. The solution involved the use of Bishop-Wisecarver’s LoPro® linear actuators, which are engineered for harsh environments. These actuators feature self-cleaning technology and are designed to provide a lower total cost of ownership. The LoPro® system simplifies installation as it serves as the structural component of the cutting axis, allowing for easy mounting of the cutting head and other components.
