This guide outlines the New York State Retail Worker Safety Act, which amends labor law to enhance workplace safety for retail employees. Effective June 2, 2025, the Act mandates that employers with at least ten retail employees implement a workplace violence prevention policy and training program. The policy must identify potential workplace violence risks, prevention methods, and provide information on statutory provisions regarding violence against retail workers. Employers must also conduct training that includes measures for employee protection, de-escalation tactics, and emergency procedures. The Act specifies that employers with 50 or more employees must provide training upon hire and annually, while those with fewer than 50 must train employees upon hire and every two years thereafter. Additionally, a silent response button for assistance is required for larger employers starting January 1, 2027. The guide emphasizes the importance of compliance with these regulations to ensure a safe working environment for retail employees.
