This study, published in The Journal of Urology, presents a comparison of long-term treatment outcomes for lower urinary tract symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It evaluates the effectiveness of a one-time water vapor thermal therapy procedure against daily medical therapies, specifically doxazosin and finasteride, using data from the MTOPS trial. The study involved a cohort of 1,140 subjects who met specific criteria, focusing on symptom changes and clinical progression over three years. Results indicated that thermal therapy led to a significant improvement in symptom scores, approximately 50% over 36 months, and demonstrated superior outcomes compared to finasteride and combination drug therapies. The findings suggest that a single thermal therapy procedure not only provides effective symptom relief but also results in lower clinical progression rates compared to ongoing pharmaceutical treatments. The study emphasizes the potential of thermal therapy as a viable alternative for managing BPH symptoms.
