This white paper presents the findings from a proof of concept trial conducted by BT and Nokia regarding the use of the Upper 6 GHz (U6 GHz) spectrum band for mobile radio networks. The trial aimed to evaluate the coverage and performance of U6 GHz compared to the existing 3.5 GHz band, as well as to assess the interference implications of shared use between mobile networks and Wi-Fi. The results indicated that U6 GHz can provide comparable coverage and performance to 3.5 GHz, despite some higher propagation losses. However, significant mutual interference risks were identified when both mobile and Wi-Fi systems operated in the same frequency band, which could adversely affect user experience. The paper discusses the technical setup of the trial, including the equipment used and the methodologies for measuring coverage and interference. It also outlines the potential for U6 GHz to enhance mobile network capacity while highlighting the challenges posed by shared use with Wi-Fi, emphasizing the need for further regulatory discussions and technical evaluations.
