Cost Savings through Custom Cataract Packs

This case study presents the experience of the Bedford Ambulatory Surgery Center (BASC) Eye Institute in New Hampshire, focusing on the implementation of custom cataract packs to reduce operational costs. Mae Sturgeon, the Materials Manager at BASC, sought to improve cost efficiencies due to rising expenses and inadequate support from their previous eye pack supplier. Collaborating with Andrew Dwyer from Cardinal Health, Sturgeon introduced Presource® Cataract Packs, which allowed for customizations based on surgeon feedback. The transition to these packs resulted in significant annual savings of $120,000 and enabled the center to perform more surgeries due to time savings of nearly two hours each week. The partnership with Cardinal Health facilitated increased rebates and improved supply consolidation, ultimately enhancing the overall efficiency of cataract surgeries at BASC. This success story highlights how effective collaboration and customized solutions can lead to operational improvements in healthcare settings.
