This case study outlines the decarbonisation project undertaken at an industrial plant in Madrid, focusing on the transition from traditional heating and cooling systems to more sustainable alternatives. The original setup included two chillers and three natural gas boilers, which supplied hot and cold water to various air conditioning units. The proposed solution involves the installation of four AquaSnap® heat pump units that utilize R32 refrigerant, aiming to enhance energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The project emphasizes the importance of integrating renewable energy sources and minimizing fossil fuel consumption to lower environmental impacts. Key design factors include characterizing heating and cooling demands, defining temperature requirements, and establishing control strategies. The methodology for successful decarbonisation involves identifying project needs, characterizing heat demand, proposing energy-saving measures, and ensuring effective integration and maintenance of the chosen solutions. Overall, the project aims to achieve significant reductions in energy consumption and CO2 emissions while optimizing operational costs.
