This case study outlines the implementation of advanced analytics techniques to optimize energy usage in a gas turbine-based cogeneration plant operated by an American aircraft engine manufacturer. The facility, which has an 8 MW capacity, faced challenges during warmer months when excess steam was released into the atmosphere, leading to underutilization of vapor absorption chillers and increased reliance on electric vapor compression chillers. Carrier Abound was engaged to analyze the cogeneration system data and identify strategies to enhance energy efficiency. The analysis revealed that inadequate control logic and inconsistent heat sources contributed to the underperformance of the vapor absorption chillers. By implementing data-driven insights and action plans, Carrier Abound improved the utilization of the cogeneration plant, resulting in a significant reduction of vent steam release and achieving over 3.2 million kWh in electricity savings in 2023, equivalent to avoiding 2,235 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
