This case study details the efforts of Houston Methodist Hospital to enhance its clinical quality ranking, which had dropped from No. 6 to No. 12 among comprehensive medical centers. The executive leaders initiated a thorough investigation to identify the underlying causes of this decline and developed strategies for improvement. Collaborating with Chartis, they implemented a new alignment and accountability model, which included establishing a governance committee and a unit-based team structure. Quality specialists were repositioned to work directly on clinical units, facilitating continuous quality improvement alongside physician and nurse leaders. As a result of these initiatives, the hospital successfully improved its Vizient ranking to No. 4 the following year. The case study emphasizes the importance of promoting alignment and accountability, repositioning quality teams, and reevaluating clinical outcomes to achieve sustainable improvements in care quality.
