This research report investigates the implementation of recommendations made by speech and language therapists (SLTs) to support safe swallowing in care home residents with dysphagia. The study observes eleven mealtimes with residents suffering from dysphagia, comparing staff actions with adherence to care plans and SLT recommendations. The findings indicate that while adherence to food texture, posture, and alertness is high at 90%, compliance with other critical practices, such as alternating food and drink and ensuring complete swallowing, falls below 60%. Additionally, thickened fluids often do not meet the required International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative levels. The report highlights the need for care homes to establish a culture of safe swallowing to enhance resident safety and care experience. It emphasizes the importance of training for care staff to better understand and implement safe swallowing strategies, as well as the role of SLTs in providing ongoing support and guidance.
