This case study outlines the implementation of the SMART libraries collaborative model, which was initiated by a group of local government libraries in New Zealand. The SMART network, which stands for Sharing and Managing a Region Together, was established to enhance collaboration and resource sharing among libraries while maintaining their independence. The model has successfully attracted additional libraries and improved operational efficiency by reducing IT infrastructure costs. The case study details how the libraries utilize a shared catalogue, allowing patrons to access a broader range of titles across different library services. It also highlights key outcomes, such as enhanced user experience and increased inter-library loans. The transition to a managed services platform provided by Spydus has alleviated the burden of IT management, enabling libraries to focus on service delivery. The case study concludes with the positive reception from customers and the ongoing commitment to the SMART model, which has proven beneficial for all participating libraries.
