This case study outlines an eight-month phase III clinical trial focused on evaluating the efficacy and safety of a biopharmaceutical company's drug for the acute treatment of migraines. The study involved 1,400 participants in the United States who suffered from acute migraines. A significant challenge in migraine studies is the high placebo response rate, which averages 29%. To address this, Clario developed a tailored online training program aimed at reducing the placebo effect. The training included information on participants' roles, the use of handheld devices for electronic patient-reported outcomes, and strategies to minimize the placebo effect. The results indicated that the training program successfully reduced the placebo response rate by more than 50%, leading to more accurate trial data and supporting the successful differentiation of the drug from the placebo on two co-primary endpoints. The study emphasizes the importance of participant training in enhancing data quality in clinical trials.
